If running your own infrastructure or reading the source code is a requirement for you, pick Monica. What Monica gets right, and where it stops
Monica proved that a CRM does not have to be built for sales. It can be built for family, friends, and the people in your circle instead. Umfeld would look different without that project, and it is worth saying so plainly rather than acting as if the idea appeared out of nowhere.
The difference shows up in daily use. Monica manages contacts mostly as individual cards, side by side. Who knows whom, how you met a person, how closely two people in your circle are actually connected: a flat contact list was not built for that. Umfeld instead maps your network as a relationship graph, with context for how you met someone, over Tinder, Instagram, or a mutual friend.
Data sync is a second gap. Monica offers an import from Google Contacts, but no ongoing two-way sync that handles deletions and merges automatically. Umfeld runs that in the background, so your contact list does not drift apart the moment you edit it in Google.
An example: Lena meets a cousin of her friend Mara at a wedding. In Monica, she adds the new contact and links him to Mara by hand, if she remembers to at all. In Umfeld, the meeting-context field records who introduced them right when the contact gets created.

The honest limitation
If source code access, forking rights, running your own server, or a community-driven roadmap matter to you, Monica is the right call. Umfeld is closed source and only available as a hosted service. In exchange your data stays in Europe instead of a US cloud, and a team keeps shipping, including the AI connection over MCP. That is a trade, not a strict upgrade.
