Google Contacts & AI

Connect Google Contacts to ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and Gemini

Your contacts live in Google. Your AI can't reach them, not on its own. Here is what actually works, client by client.

Short answer: not directly, but through Umfeld. Google Contacts has no official bridge to AI assistants. Umfeld syncs your address book and exposes it through MCP. That already works with Claude today, works with ChatGPT through its developer mode, and doesn't yet work in a comparably simple way with Gemini or Grok.

The problem: your address book and your AI don't talk to each other

Ask ChatGPT or Claude, without a connection, when you met someone, and you get a polite refusal or a guess. Neither client has access to your Google Contacts, and Google itself offers no bridge to AI assistants. Your contact data sits in one silo, the conversation in another, and normally you're the one doing the translation in between: looking things up, copying, pasting.

This isn't only about names and phone numbers. The real value is in context Google never captures: how you met someone, when you last talked, who introduced whom. No one types that context into a chat by hand.

The fix: Umfeld as the bridge

Umfeld is a personal CRM that mirrors your Google Contacts and adds a relationship graph, an interaction log, and life events. That enriched dataset is exactly what the MCP server exposes, reachable at https://api.umfeld.app/mcp, secured with OAuth.

A plain address book turns into something an AI can actually read, and, if you allow it, write to as well. The MCP server runs, like the rest of Umfeld, as a hosted service from Europe, at the same pricing: free for 7 days, then 6 EUR a month or 60 EUR a year.

In short

  • About 58 MCP tools: search contacts, create relationships, log interactions
  • Find cooling contacts, search notes by meaning
  • Access is authorized per client, through OAuth

Connect Claude

Claude supports MCP servers through its own connectors, and it already works reliably. More on the technical side is on AI and MCP.

  1. 1

    Copy the URL

In Umfeld, under Connections, copy the address https://api.umfeld.app/mcp.
  2. 2

    Add the connector

In Claude, go to Settings, Connectors, Add custom connector, and paste the URL.
  3. 3

    Authorize

Confirm the OAuth dialog. From then on Claude can read your network and, with your permission, update it too.

Connect ChatGPT

ChatGPT supports MCP servers through Connectors, or its developer mode. You add the Umfeld URL there as a custom connector and confirm the OAuth dialog. After that, ChatGPT can query Umfeld during a conversation whenever you enable the connection for that chat.

Worth knowing

Whether you see this option depends on your ChatGPT plan and the current feature rollout. Check under Connectors or beta features in your ChatGPT settings to see if custom connectors are enabled for your account.

What about Gemini and Grok?

Not as easily. Google Gemini and xAI Grok currently don't offer a finished end-user connector for external MCP servers comparable to what Claude and ChatGPT already have. That may change, both companies are building their own agent features. In practice, that means today you either wait for an official connector or reach for a more technical route through an MCP-capable developer tool. There isn't a ready-made click-through guide for Gemini or Grok yet, and we won't pretend otherwise by writing one.

What becomes possible after that

Show me everyone I met through investors.

Four people, sorted by last contact: Lukas Herrmann, introduced by your mentor Carlo Vella in the fall of 2023, then three more through two different investor events.

Who in my network changed jobs recently?

Two people in the last three months, based on your life events: Peter Soto, a new role in product management, and Mira Salet, who moved to a startup.

Summarize what I know about Lukas Herrmann.

Met in 2023 through Carlo Vella, works in investment, last contact six weeks ago over coffee. Answers like this come from the relationship graph, not from guessing.

Privacy: what the AI sees, and what it doesn't

This is the real concern with this topic, so it belongs visibly on this page:

  • Entries, notes, and relationship chapters marked private are excluded from access and never appear in an answer.
  • Access is granted per client and can be revoked at any time for that one client in the Connections area, without touching the others.
  • Umfeld logs which client last accessed your data, and when.
  • Once a client retrieves data, it becomes subject to that provider's own privacy policy from that point on. That applies to Claude just as much as to ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a paid Umfeld account for this?

Yes. Umfeld costs 6 EUR a month or 60 EUR a year, with a 7-day free trial. A card is required for the trial.

Where does the MCP server run?

In Europe, like the rest of Umfeld. Access follows the same OAuth rules as the rest of your account.

Can I revoke access for one client later?

Yes, in the Connections area you disconnect each client individually, immediately, without affecting the others.

Does ChatGPT see my whole address book at once?

No. The client only retrieves what it specifically asks for in the conversation, such as one contact or one search. There's no bulk export to the client.
